Tell us how you started your Toastmasters journey. Who inspired you to join?
My Toastmasters journey began when I first heard about it at a work event. I was immediately intrigued, and when I stepped into my first meeting, I was struck by the warmth and welcoming nature of the club officers. That initial impression stayed with me. I give full credit to my first club president, Randy Nystrom, for encouraging me to join and helping me see the potential this platform had to offer.
What kept you motivated to continue being part of Toastmasters?
This is one of my favorite questions because I have many reasons. First and foremost, it is the people. Toastmasters fosters a community unlike any other—a space where you can seek help, find guidance, receive mentoring, or simply be heard. The bonds formed here are meaningful and long-lasting.
Second, it is the platform’s incredible ability to let you experiment and grow. I wanted to explore my writing skills, so I joined the blog team. I wanted to test my managerial capabilities, so I took on the role of Division Director. When I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the broader picture, I stepped into the role of District Director. What made it all so powerful was knowing that I could make mistakes, learn from them, and still be supported. Toastmasters is truly a safe space to grow.
Tell us about the inspiration behind taking up District Leadership roles.
When I joined Toastmasters, I never imagined that one day I would serve as the District Director. Initially, I simply wanted to amplify my voice at work. As I pursued that goal, I discovered the impact of club leadership.
My first district role was as an Area Director. That experience opened up a new dimension for me—there was so much to learn, understand, and contribute, especially through working with people from diverse backgrounds. The most fulfilling part of this journey has been the opportunity to inspire others while being inspired by them in return. Every leadership role I have taken has helped sharpen my skills, broaden my vision, and deepen my sense of purpose.
Before being part of the District Trio, you served on the District PR Team. Tell us about that experience, and how PR can be more effective.
Public Relations is very close to my heart—it was my very first club officer role and remains my favorite. I have always been a closeted writer, penning poetry and articles privately, unsure if anyone would be interested in reading them. Joining the PR team gave me the courage to share my writing with others.
As a blog writer, I contributed articles about platforms like LinkedIn, and even today, people remember me for those pieces. PR, as the name suggests, is about connection. It is about creating content that resonates—something that is memorable, thought-provoking, and easy to recall.
As a district, we have made significant strides—enhancing our website, introducing the calendar, celebrating award winners, and improving engagement across Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook. The key to effective PR lies in continued experimentation, creativity, and meaningful outreach.
You tend to avoid the limelight as a leader. What communication strategies help you ensure your vision reaches every member?
You noticed that, did you? One of my favorite leadership quotes says, “A leader is best when people barely know they exist.” That resonates deeply with me.
I believe leadership is about modeling the behaviors and values we want to see. I do not need to be everywhere because I want my team to step forward, take initiative, and lead. I believe in building a strong pipeline of leaders so the organization remains resilient even after my term ends. Sustainability matters more than visibility.
My communication strategy is simple: I rely on my team. Each member carries the district’s mission into their interactions, events, and initiatives. My team is my voice, and their success is the best reflection of our collective vision.
How was your experience as a District Leader? What were your challenges, and how did you tackle them?
I would recommend district leadership to every Toastmaster. Each role pushes us out of our comfort zones and into a space of learning and growth. These roles help uncover strengths and skills we did not know we had.
I have shared many of my challenges with you in my newsletters. They may sound familiar or even cliché, but each one has brought valuable lessons. I have made mistakes—and shared them—so others can learn from my experiences and make their own new mistakes, because that is how we grow.
Do you have any thoughts to share with the incoming leadership team?
To the incoming team, I wish you a fulfilling and impactful year. It may be a one-year term, but time flies when you are doing meaningful work and having fun. Be intentional about your journey. Savor the moments, support each other, and remember to enjoy every step of the way.
