Abstract: We’ll discuss three levels of communication when leading: Dialogue, Presenting, and Internal. Learn how to allow the authentic leader in you to emerge and take center stage in all that you do. Faye Yang: Faye, DTM, began her journey with Toastmasters in 2003, and has served in almost every club officer role multiple times. Though she was hesitant to step up as an Area Director, she has since continued to serve in various District leadership roles such as Division Director, District Public Relations Manager, and Club Growth team member. Faye currently serves as a Web Team member helping to maintain the District website. Session: How to Run a Successful Online Speech Contest

Bio: 

Diane Bair: Currently the District Speech Contest Chair, Diane has been a Toastmaster since 2005, is a member of two clubs in Monterey, and a Distinguished Toastmaster. Improved communication was her goal, but leadership drew her in. She is a past Division Governor, Area Governor, and Club Mentor; has served on the Club Growth Team and currently serves on the Program Quality Team; and has taken on roles at all levels of club leadership multiple times.
Nishant Chandrashekar: Nishant is a Software Engineer who has been a Toastmaster for 2+ years. In this time, he has helped organize the Fall Fusion 2019 and the Annual May 2020 conference. He has also been a Tech Chair for multiple events as well as contests for both Spring 2020 and Fall 2019. As a tech guru, he brings his expertises to help run TLIs, Great Events, and COTs. He also helps others understand Zoom and is a member of the D101 PQ Team! In his free time, he enjoys reading novels on the web and helping people out.
Kari Lynn Morgan: Kari Lynn is a relationship and communication coach whose purpose is to bring more connection to the world through honesty and trust. She has facilitated many workshops, lectures, and retreats over the last 7 years and most recently has been teaching several peers to better utilize Zoom.  Kari Lynn has been a Toastmaster for nearly 2 years and moved into the role of a tech chair in 2020 for TLI’s, COTs and Fall Fusion.
Solarzar Dellaporta: Solarzar has been a Toastmaster for 25 years. He has conducted contests at the Club, Area, Division, and District level. He has been an Area Governor of the Year, a District 4 Toastmaster of the Year, a Division Governor of the Year and most recently a Division Director for Division A. He serves as the current Club Extension Chair for District 101. Solarzar believes everything can be made easier if we complete one task at a time as we move forward, which is the heart of the Toastmaster program.
Faye Yang: Faye has been a Toastmaster since 2003 and believes there are many skills to learn and knowledge to gain when you serve in a variety of District Leadership roles. She has served as a Division Director and District Public Relations Manager, amongst other District roles, and has chaired/organized multiple contests, open houses, and special events. Most recently, Faye served as the Program Chair for the 2020 District 101 Annual Conference, designing the interactive, online conference and contest programs, as well as the Contest Chair for last October’s online Fall Fusion Contests.

Session: How to Effectively Respond to Criticism

Abstract: Do you find yourself in conflict with others – friends? Family members? Coworkers? Employers?
Employees? Do you struggle at times to resolve those conflicts? Would it surprise you to learn that the most important step towards resolving conflict is to become a more effective listener?

This presentation focuses on specific ways that you can break through difficult communications with a simple, yet powerful, approach to listening empathetically. Listening effectively means being open to a point of view with which you may disagree, putting aside your own judgments and thoughts, and focusing all attention on the messages – spoken and unspoken – that the other person is sending. In a conflict, understanding the other person’s point of view is a crucial first step towards resolution.

You will learn a simple, yet powerful and effective approach to listening effectively in difficult and even confrontational situations. Using this listening skill, you can transform any conflict into an opportunity for constructive resolution to a problem, a deepening of understanding and empathy, and ultimately an improvement to the relationship itself.

Bio: Arnold Buss received an undergraduate degree in Psychology at Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in Operations Research at Cornell University. He has been teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels for the past 30 years. A longtime member of Toastmasters, he has achieved the rank of Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) and is a past Area Governor. He teaches seminars on Effective Communication and Relationship Building and has previously given presentations on interpersonal communication skills to many local. Session: The Rhythm of English

Abstract: Sheila, a Los Gatos and Next Step Toastmaster, and the head accent reduction coach at Smooth English, will offer a 1 hour interactive workshop designed to help you appreciate what makes English a stress-timed language, as opposed to a syllable-timed language.  You will learn what syllables to stress, which words to stress, how to stress and how to “unstress.”  You will improve your vocal variety and comprehensibility by implementing vowel lengthening, reductions, linking and blending as you work in small groups.  Those who are brave will even volunteer to display their efforts in front of everyone, to be corrected by the instructor.

Pat Johnson, DTM, PIP A resident of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Johnson offers the Toastmasters organization more than 30 years of experience in working in policy, career development and strategic planning. She has international experience as a speaker and trainer and is skilled in conflict resolution, negotiation and mediation. In addition, her work experience includes organizational development and delivery and evaluation of programs in adult education.

In 2004-2006 she was elected and served as International Director on the International Board of Toastmasters International and continued through the Vice President roles until 2010-2011 when she served this not-for-profit educational organization as their International President and Chairman of the Board. Pat is the only Canadian woman to serve in this prestigious role.

In the community, Pat has served as a Board Member with the Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, Commonwealth Games Speaker’s Bureau trainer, Saanich Rotary Club, as well as a mentor for Leadership Victoria for five years. She is currently a member of Victoria Curling Club, Advisory Board member at the University of Victoria and just recently served on a fund raising committee for the Arts Community of Victoria. 

She currently owns a speaking, coaching and training business, Pat Johnson & Associates and is an Affiliate of Accomplishment Coaching.

Michael Notaro, DTM, PIP from Alameda, California served as the 2011-2012 Toastmasters International President. During his Presidency, Toastmasters launched a new visual system and branding initiative which included the tagline “Toastmasters: where leaders are made.”

The organization also updated its worldwide mission to focus on “empowering individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders,” updated the district mission to focus on “building new clubs and supporting all clubs in achieving excellence,” and updated the club mission to focus on building “a supportive and positive learning experience resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.”

Born and bred in the “windy city” of Chicago, Illinois, USA, Michael came to California to attend the University of California at Berkeley where he majored in political economy, played on the water polo team and made the single best decision of his life: he joined the CAL Bears Toastmasters Club in May of 1985.

During his thirty-five years of Toastmasters membership, Michael has held every leadership role from dogcatcher to International President. He has given over 600 speeches to enthusiastic Toastmasters on five continents. During the 2019-2020, Michael served as chairman of the International Leadership Committee (ILC) responsible for nominating International Director and Officer Candidates at the International Convention which begins next week! Michael is author of the bestselling book “The Call of the Leader” available on Amazon which was released at the 2019 Toastmasters International Convention.

He is currently an active member of three Toastmasters Clubs and served with distinction in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. Michael is a practicing real estate attorney and principal of Notaro Law Group where he uses his Toastmasters skills every day.

Jim Kokocki, DTM, PIP is a writer, speaker, facilitator, and speech coach. 

As a volunteer leader, Jim serves as President and Board Chair of L’Arche Saint John, part of a worldwide network of communities creating homes, work, and day programs together with people who have intellectual disabilities.

Session: The Magic of the Mindset

Speaker: Stewart Murrie

Abstract: Is there something you always wanted to do but felt it wasn’t for you, like learning a foreign language, playing an instrument, or starting your own business? Have you ever chased your dreams, but fallen at the first hurdle and walked away convinced that you just aren’t good enough?

In this workshop, Stewart will guide participants to level up their lives by developing a growth mindset, a powerful mentality that can unlock possibilities and unleash the untapped potential in all of us. You’ll walk away with an understanding of your current mindset, some tools to change your self-perception, and the most powerful word in the world for achieving lifelong success.

Bio: Stewart Murrie is a San Francisco-based product designer, speaker and coach. He is an active member of two clubs in District 4, Dolby Speakers and San Francisco Storytellers, and has served as both an Area and Division Director. He competes regularly, having reached District finals on four occasions, winning the 2017 District 4 Evaluation Contest. He was also recognized as the 2017 District 4 Toastmaster of the Year. Stewart loves helping teams work better together, and regularly runs workshops on topics such as brainstorming, evaluations and leadership.
